In 2020, Matt Cardona faced an unexpected setback when he was released from WWE. Over the past four years, he has transformed himself into a megastar on the independent circuit. In fact, now Cardona believes a match with John Cena is a real possibility under the current WWE regime.

The 2024 WWE Money in the Bank event in Toronto, Canada saw John Cena announce his impending retirement as professional wrestler, as the Leader of Cenation will hang up his pro wrestling boots in December 2025.

Matt Cardona, formerly known as Zack Ryder in WWE, experienced a fleeting on-screen friendship with John Cena, which ultimately didn’t benefit Ryder. He ended up as a pawn for Cena’s adversaries and Eve Torres, limiting his chances for singles success during his WWE career.

While speaking in an interview with Scott Fishman, Cardona shared his ambition to face Cena in the ring again. He talked about potential storylines and his respect for Cena, mentioning his professionalism and the support Cena provided throughout his career.

Cardona noted that Cena’s strategic approach to his career, including creating hype long before his appearances, is impressive. He expressed a strong desire to wrestle Cena once more, believing that WWE’s current environment might allow for a special match or even a brief return.

“I’ve looked at the John for a long time. We did get close during my WWE run. He is just a pro’s pro. What a way to go out. What a smart way to go out, huh? A whole year-plus because he’s hyping it up in July,” Cardona praised. “John is such a great guy. He’s somebody who’s definitely helped me in my career. But, yeah, all those posts that I’m making on social media, they’re not BS. I would love to wrestle John Cena one last time. I think with the way WWE is now, it’s something that could happen where I could just walk in, whether it be for one day, or make a return.”

“I think, Zack Ryder vs. John Cena, those matches were fine. They were what they were,” Cardona continued. “John Cena vs. Matt Cardona, that’s that’s where the story is, right? Because you could play it so many different ways. Matt Cardona could say, ‘John, you’re the reason my WWE career didn’t take off.’ There’s so many things that we could play into.

We have also reported that WWE is already considering opponents for John Cena’s retirement tour. Therefore, only time will tell whether Matt Cardona will get his wish and square off against John Cena one more time in WWE.
