Several stars in TNA have gotten a lot of exposure lately and that especially includes Joe Hendry. His rise has been so impactful that nearly everyone in the business has started believing in him and now he has shared a very wholesome story about his first experience with John Cena.

On the June 18th episode of NXT, the opening lines of “I Believe in Joe Hendry” echoed through the arena to thunderous ovation from the live crowd as Joe Hendry made his entrance on NXT. Hendry then followed it up with subsequent appearances at NXT Heatwave and the July 9th WWE NXT.

While speaking in an interview with Denise Salcedo, Joe Hendry shared that the first pro wrestler he ever spoke to was John Cena, thanks to a friend’s help. Hendry recounted that when he was 15, there was a wrestling show he wanted to attend but couldn’t. His friend Kyle, who went to the show and got the VIP package, called him from the event.

To Hendry’s surprise, the person on the other end of the line was John Cena. His friend had asked Cena to call him since he couldn’t make it to the show. Despite a long queue at the VIP event, Cena talked to Hendry for 5-10 minutes, making him the first pro wrestler Hendry ever spoke to.

“When I was 15 years old, there was a wrestling show. I’d never been to a live wrestling show before. I wanted to go, I couldn’t go. My friend went, he got the VIP package and my phone rings, answer the phone. It’s my friend Kyle’s phone but the person that answered said, ‘Yo, it’s your boy John Cena.’ My friend asked John Cena, ‘Look my friend couldn’t make it but could you call him?’ And John Cena talked to me for 5-10 minutes while there was a huge queue at this VIP thing because my friend told him that I couldn’t make it. So John Cena was the first pro wrestler I ever talked to.

Joe Hendry has expressed his desire to face John Cena in a future match. With Cena set to retire in December 2025, there is still ample time for their paths to cross in the ring. We’ll have to wait and see if this highly anticipated showdown becomes a reality.
