The 2024 WWE Money in the Bank event in Toronto, Canada, was packed with unforgettable moments and solid matches. One of the biggest topics from the show was John Cena’s emotional announcement that he would be retiring from in-ring competition in 2025. It appears that several talents were kept in the dark about his impending retirement.

During the show, John Cena took the ring to a thunderous ovation and delivered shocking news: he would be retiring from in-ring competition. The audience’s reaction was a blend of admiration and sadness as they processed the announcement.

In his heartfelt speech, Cena thanked the Canadian fans for their steadfast support of WWE over the years. He revealed that 2025 would be his final year in the ring, with his official retirement set for December of that year.

They even prepared “last time” merchandise for John Cena, which he wore during his announcement. While speaking on Fightful Select’s Backstage Report podcast, Sean Ross Sapp reported that talent he spoke to didn’t realize John Cena was going to retire until they saw the “last time” merchandise.

Several people within the company were aware of the upcoming news, as they needed to produce the merchandise, but it was kept confidential. Sapp mentioned that he asked WWE about it that day, but they didn’t disclose Cena’s plans for the show. Cena wasn’t hiding, and the company didn’t try to keep it a secret.

“Now talent that I spoke to said that they didn’t realize he was going to retire until they saw him the “last time” merchandise. There were several people in the company that knew the news was coming. Obviously they had to produce the merchandise but that was kept close to the vest. I actually asked WWE that day. Didn’t say he would be doing anything on the show. He wasn’t hiding and they didn’t try to keep it a secret. “

The specifics of Cena’s retirement tour are yet to be announced, but Cena explained why he will retire from in-ring competition in 2025. Nonetheless, we’ll have to see how his final run in WWE will turn out, as it will truly be the end of an era.
