Shelton Benjamin is a true veteran in the world of professional wrestling, and he was released from WWE last year. In the meantime, many fans wanted to see him in AEW, but not Max Caster. In light of Max Caster’s negative remarks, Benjamin has finally addressed the same.
In case you forgot, Max Caster previously noted that he does not want to see Shelton Benjamin make his way to AEW and take away Caster’s spot on the roster. Naturally, this comment wasn’t taken well by many fans.
While speaking to Chris Van Vliet on the Insight podcast, Shelton Benjamin was asked about Max Caster claiming Benjamin would go to AEW to take Caster’s spot. Shelton Benjamin expressed his initial surprise at hearing comments from Caster, someone he didn’t know, saying he had no prior relationship with them and was more shocked by the statement itself.
Benjamin mentioned that the person is already on the roster and should focus on changing their situation if they’re unhappy. Benjamin further added that he poses no threat to anyone’s spot, highlighting that established names like Roman Reigns or Swerve can’t have their spots taken, although someone could lose their spot.
“[Laughs] I guess my first thought was, who is this? I’m like, I really don’t know him. I have nothing against him, as far as I know I’ve never met him. I was more shocked that he would say something like that. And again, I don’t know him, I don’t have a relationship with him.
To that I would say, one, you’re already on the roster, and whatever you’re doing there, if you’re not happy, then you need to change that. I’m still on the outside. At this point, I’m really no threat to you, but if I were to come in, someone with my name, you’re looking at me as a threat rather than an asset. Because, one, if I were to go to AEW or any company, my job there is to bring more fans and put more eyes on you. My thing is, I want to work with these people. At this stage in my career, I want to help other talent. So if you’re saying, ‘Oh, you’re stealing my spot,’ well, first of all, if I can steal it, it wasn’t your spot. I can’t take Roman Reigns’ spot, I can’t take Swerve’s spot, I can’t take anyone’s spot. However, you can lose your spot. That’s how I look at it.”
Benjamin explained that his potential role in any company would be to attract more fans and help elevate other talent. Benjamin believes welcoming experienced talent should be seen as an opportunity to improve and secure one’s position. He pointed out that working with veterans brings experience and recognition, which benefits everyone involved.
Benjamin also noted that he doesn’t see the person as a significant threat and suggested that if he joined, it would likely be a short-term stint aimed at helping others develop. He emphasized the importance of focusing on growth and not fearing competition.
“If I were to come anywhere, there’s a reason I’m being brought in, and I would think it’s to help grow the company and bring more eyes there. So, if anything, you should welcome new talent or, rather, old established talent, because that gives you another opportunity to work with someone who can elevate you. That spot you’re so afraid of losing helps you secure it because now you’re working with people who elevate your game. You’re working with people with experience, who fans know and will tune in to watch. I don’t know anyone running around with Max Caster merch.
He’s not a household name. Maybe he was in character, I don’t know. For me, it’s really, ‘Yeah, kid, I’ve been around for 25 years.’ If you’re worried about your spot being taken by me, someone who’s been around for 25 years, and chances are if I came there, I probably wouldn’t be there very long. Bro, you’ve got years more to develop. If anything, I come in, help you, give you a piece of knowledge, and move on, whether you want it or not. But if you’re so worried about your spot, I don’t really think I’m that big of a threat to you. There’s tons of people coming in there all the time.”
Shelton Benjamin also made it clear he is open to working in AEW despite initial talks falling through. Therefore, we will have to wait and see whether The Gold Standard will debut in AEW and perhaps feud with Max Caster.
