Years after their days together as part of Jurassic Express in AEW’s early era, Marko Stunt made a surprising return to the company during the July 6, 2024 AEW Collision. He answered TNT Champion Jack Perry’s open challenge, delighting fans with his unexpected comeback.
Stunt, a native of Mississippi and a hometown favorite, had not stepped into an AEW ring since September 2021. His last notable appearance at the Landers Center in Southaven saw him team up with Perry and Luchasaurus to face Orange Cassidy & Best Friends on the one-year Dynamite anniversary show.
AEW opted not to renew Stunt’s contract in March 2022, citing budget constraints and an expanding roster. Over a year later, Stunt dismissed a reference made to him on Dynamite as “kind of lame.”
In their match, Perry dominated for the most part, at one point launching the smaller Stunt into the middle turnbuckle with a lawn dart maneuver. Despite his 18-month absence from wrestling, Stunt showed no signs of ring rust, seizing several opportunities to shine. However, Perry ultimately secured the victory with a running knee.
Stunt’s last match before Saturday was a January 2023 loss in GCW. He revealed in February 2023 that he had suffered a fractured and rotated vertebrae, and doctors were working with him to manage the injury.
This match marked Perry’s first title defense since winning the TNT Championship in a ladder match at last Sunday’s AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door event. Fans are now eager to see what the future holds for both Stunt and Perry in AEW.
