Jon Moxley has a well-established history with New Japan Pro-Wrestling and has made significant appearances in the promotion over the years. He became the IWGP Champion earlier this year, and the reason for that has been revealed.
As previously reported, Jon Moxley defeated Tetsuya Naito to claim the IWGP Heavyweight Championship at NJPW Windy City Riot, thus making history and fans were happy for him.
The Purveyor of Violence would go on to defend the IWGP World Championship a few times and finally have a rematch with Tetsuya Naito at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door last week. Moxley would ultimately drop the title back to Tetsuya Naito when all was said and done.
According to Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the IWGP title change was orchestrated by Tony Khan and New Japan, allowing for two title changes to take place in the U.S. This arrangement thus enabled Jon Moxley to make history by becoming the first man to hold the AEW, IWGP, and WWE world titles.
We will have to wait and see what’s next in store for Jon Moxley now that he is no longer the IWGP World Champion. After all, he remains an integral part of AEW television and can never be counted out no matter what.
