Fans witnessed quite a roller coaster ride on the road to WrestleMania 40. This was documented by many cameras throughout the whole experience, and fans got to finally see the documentary on YouTube today after months of edits.
In the WrestleMania XL: Behind The Curtain documentary, The Rock addressed the decision to switch from a match between him and Reigns to one between Cody and Reigns. He explained a meeting he had with WWE officials where he shared his thoughts on the matter.
The Rock expressed that while they could go ahead with the main event featuring him and Roman Reigns, which would attract a broad audience, including many who don’t typically watch WWE, he felt uneasy about a segment of fans being upset. This discomfort went against how he had operated throughout his career.
“I said ‘here’s how I’m feeling.’ We can truck through this and we can put on this main event. The majority of the world, many of which who don’t watch WWE – who we do plan on pulling in in the execution of our marketing plan etc, they’re gonna love this idea of Rock and Roman and we’re gonna tell an amazing story. We could do that.”
“My gut says that I don’t like, even if it’s a segment of fans, I don’t like that they’re upset and it really bugged the shit out of me. It’s not how I’ve operated my entire career. I don’t like it. I knew that the choice essentially was mine. I believe we should go Roman/Cody, will Cody finish his story? Take care of those fans because it’s critical and important.”
During the February 2nd, 2024 edition of WWE Smackdown, Cody Rhodes appeared to step aside to allow Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to face Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 40. However, at the Kickoff event, Cody ultimately chose Reigns as his opponent for WrestleMania.
Cody Rhodes said that The Rock should have known that he wouldn’t be okay with losing the WrestleMania 40 main event match spot to The Rock. In the end, they went the direction they did and the Final Boss ended up in a tag team match on night one instead. Only time will tell how things pan out for WrestleMania 41, because The Rock has promised his return.
