Gable Steveson was once seen as the next big thing in WWE, drawing comparisons to Olympic gold medalist Kurt Angle. However, this backfired during his NXT debut when the crowd chanted “you’re not Angle” as he wrestled Baron Corbin. Now, Steveson has signed an NFL contract with the Buffalo Bills.
During a conference for NXT Heatwave, Shawn Michaels was asked about Steveson’s departure from WWE. Michaels did not comment on Steveson’s new NFL role but shared what happened behind the scenes. According to Michaels, there was simply nothing for Steveson in WWE.
Michaels explained that Gulak’s contract was expiring and there wasn’t a spot for Steveson on the main roster. The decision to part ways was made from a business standpoint.
“As far as Gable is concerned, he’s an incredibly talented guy. It’s amazing some of the things he can do. He’s a dude who lands on his feet. I wish him luck (in the NFL), and excited to see how that works out. At NXT, we use people to the best of their ability, but from a main roster standpoint, if they feel there is not a place for them, and their contracts are up, from a business standpoint, they choose to move on.”
We will see how Gable Steveson fares in the NFL, but his move has certainly garnered attention for the Bills. Shawn Michaels likely wishes him the best of luck.
