Mercedes Mone is undoubtedly one of the top female stars in AEW right now after debuting in March, but she has her fair share of controversies and that includes her injuring Saraya several years ago, leading to her retirement. In light of that controversy, she had addressed being an unsafe worker.

Saraya was forced to end her in-ring career due to injuries sustained while working in the ring. The incident took place during a 2017 WWE MSG Show, where she was kicked from the back by Mercedes Mone.

While speaking to HOT97, Mercedes Mone was asked about accidentally injuring Saraya. Mercedes Mone said that she felt extremely depressed by the situation. Reflecting on 2017 or 2018, she explained that it definitely set her on a spiral of depression. Wrestling has always been her biggest goal and dream, and she has always wanted to be the greatest at it. Hearing any kind of noise suggesting she might not be safe was very disheartening.

It wasn’t even wrestlers in the back; it was the fans who thought she wasn’t safe. She said that kind of fear is a part of the business, where injuries are a constant risk. You never know when you’re going to get hurt, sprain something, break a neck, or injure a knee. That’s the nature of the business. Wrestlers have to go out there knowing they are putting their lives on the line, but they do everything they can to protect each other. She acknowledged that accidents happen despite these precautions.

“I was so depressed by it. I feel like, when was that, in 2017 or 2018? That definitely set me on a spiral of depression because wrestling has always been my biggest goal and dream, and I’ve always wanted to be the greatest at it. So to hear any kind of noise that people might not think you’re safe, or it wasn’t even the boys in the back, it’s just the fans thinking you’re not safe. Yeah, it’s scary sometimes, but that’s the business that we’re in. You never know when you’re going to get hurt; you never know when you’re going to sprain something, break a neck, break a knee. It’s just the business. You have to go out there knowing that you’re going to put your life on the line, but we do everything we can to protect each other, and unfortunately, that happened.”

Mercedes Mone also made it clear she is ready to square off against Saraya in the future in AEW. Nevertheless, Mone has moved on from the situation and focusing on her role as TBS Champion and fans have accepted that as well.
