AEW President Tony Khan has been leading the ship in AEW for better or worse over the past several years. One of AEW’s most pressing issues is definitely the dwindling ratings over the years, but Khan claimed that others would like to have ratings like AEW.
Last week’s episode of AEW Dynamite drew concerning television ratings, with only 502,000 viewers and a 0.16 key demo rating. This was a significant drop from the previous week’s 681,000 viewers and a 0.23 demo on June 12th, and 680,000 viewers with a 0.22 rating in the 18-49 demographic on June 26th.
It is to be noted that this week’s episode of AEW had The Big Bang Theory as its lead-in, a factor that wasn’t present when AEW recorded its record-low ratings. Even then, many fans are growing concerned about AEW’s dwindling ratings every week.
While speaking to Wrestling Observer Radio, Tony Khan was asked about AEW’s struggle with ratings. Khan emphasized AEW’s strategy and perspective on their growth and competition in the wrestling industry. Khan was very confident in AEW’s performance, stating that other people in television would kill to get viewership numbers like AEW, indicating a strong position in the market. He added emphasis to a focus on producing quality shows for AEW rather than fixating on what competitors are doing
“We need to keep doing what we’re doing, because the numbers we have are numbers people in TV would kill to have and I really need to focus on doing good shows for AEW and not about what competition is doing, & I think in this case our competition going out ahead of us and getting good media rights deals was a positive for us and actually good for us because we have very good historical comps, and these comps are very favourable for us. So that’s one thing I’ve done, a ton of market research and retain top analysts and data scientists and looking at this stuff.”
Will Ospreay has also addressed AEW’s record-low rating for Dynamite. Regardless, we will have to wait and see how AEW will continue to improve its product and deal with their plummeting ratings.
