Ricky Starks has played a significant role in AEW since 2020, but fans have noticed his absence from television since late March. Meanwhile, a lot of rumors regarding an incident involving Starks in Calgary last year have spread like wildfire and now we have clarification in that regard.
A Reddit post sparked widespread discussions and memes suggesting Ricky Starks had legal issues in Calgary last year and frequently declined creative ideas from AEW. However, Fightful Select confirmed that while Starks did turn down some storyline ideas, claims that he outright rejected all pitches were not substantiated by their sources.
One specific storyline idea Starks declined involved a breakup and feud with Big Bill, believing it wouldn’t benefit either wrestler. Despite criticism from some within AEW about his cooperation, Starks preferred an amicable split with Big Bill rather than a scenario where he would defeat him.
Last year, Starks was notably absent from All In, prompting AEW to run a suspension storyline to manage fan reactions. He expressed dissatisfaction with his booking following CM Punk’s departure, feeling his momentum had slowed.
Currently medically cleared to compete, Starks’ recent communication with AEW’s Tony Khan remains unclear. There is internal inconsistency regarding Starks’ status, with no immediate creative plans for him, though this could change.
Regarding the Calgary incident rumors, many AEW sources denied knowledge, and both Starks and those allegedly involved refuted any legal issues. Fightful’s attempt to verify with local authorities yielded no information.
While speculation persists about Starks potentially wanting to move to WWE, there is no definitive information available about his current contract status with AEW.
We have also reported on the abandoned plans for Ricky Starks and Big Bill’s tag team. Starks has now been seen since the March 30 episode of AEW Collision, so we’ll have to see when he will finally return to AEW television.
