A recent topic of discussion in the wrestling world is the new series “Who Killed WCW?” The project delves into the downfall of Ted Turner’s promotion, which once outperformed WWE Raw in the ratings for 83 consecutive weeks.
The Immortal Hulk Hogan, one of WCW’s top stars known as Hollywood Hulk Hogan, reflected on the company’s decline, culminating in WWE acquiring WCW in 2001. In a recent interview with Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated, Hogan, giving his own opinion on the subject, stated that there was no possibility for WCW to survive under the circumstances that prevailed at the time.
“It’s not the flashiest story, but I can tell you what killed WCW. There was no way WCW was going to survive, not under those circumstances.”
Further, the former WCW Champion referred to the infamous 2001 merger between American Online and Time Warner. He recounted how this merger spelt the end for WCW, who were not interested in the business and even having wrestling promotion in their portfolio, posing multiple challenges faced by then-WCW President Eric Bischoff.
“So many people knock Eric, but there was an opposition he was dealing with from the higher-ups in the company. He just wasn’t going to win that battle. These were executives who had no idea what wrestling was all about, and they had no interest in learning. They wanted more traditional programming. They didn’t want wrestling in their high-brow portfolio. They weren’t interested, and nothing else mattered.”ld highlight the significant obstacles Bischoff faced, emphasizing that understanding these challenges is crucial to telling the full story.”
Much like Hogan, multiple wrestling personalities like Tony Schiavone and Konnan have also voiced their opinion on the topic. Despite no longer being in existence, WCW would always remain a major driving force for WWE’s success, posing a serious threat to them at the time and leading WWE to up the ante to greater heights.
