WWE Hall of Famer ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin has accomplished everything one would want to accomplish as a professional wrestler and that’s why his appearances were always a big deal. In fact, Austin was allegedly concerned fans wouldn’t remember him before his return in 2019.
While speaking during an episode of the Behind The Turnbuckle podcast, Jonathan Coachman shared a memorable moment he had with Steve Austin backstage at RAW back in 2019. Coachman recalled Austin being visibly nervous before heading to the ring, concerned that fans might not remember him after his hiatus from wrestling.
Coachman recounted how he reassured Austin, reminding him of his status as one of the greatest legends in wrestling history. He recalled saying to Austin, “You are Stone Cold Steve Austin. There’s only ever been one.” According to Coachman, Austin was so moved by their conversation that when he went out to the ring, he even mentioned Coachman by name on the microphone.
“Stone Cold Steve Austin is standing there backstage and he looks at me and you could tell he was unbelievably nervous. And he’s like: ‘Coach, I’m so nervous. What if they don’t remember me?’ And I looked at him and I said: ‘You are Stone Cold Steve Austin. There’s only ever been one. And he went out there, I don’t know if you guys remember this, he actually said my name on the microphone. He said, ‘I was just backstage. The Coach was talking to me and he reminded me of who the hell I am.”
The Texas Rattlesnake addressed having one more match after WrestleMania 38. Regardless, Steve Austin’s popularity will stand the test of time and that is all that matters.
