All Elite Wrestling taped AEW Collision at the PPL Center in Allentown, PA for the June 22nd episode of Collision and it appears AEW didn’t inform Ultimo Guerrero about a crucial factor in his match against Kazuchika Okada.
Kazuchika Okada squared off against the legendary Ultimo Guerrero as part of AEW and CMLL’s working relationship on AEW Collision this week. However, the match was widely criticized for not living up to standards.
According to Luchablog, AEW promoted Ultimo Guerrero under his masked persona, even though he has been wrestling unmasked for nearly 10 years as of this September. Tony Khan had observed him wrestle masked in CMLL.
Fans familiar with FantasticaMania would know Ultimo Guerrero typically performs well while masked. However, it appears Ultimo Guerrero was not informed in advance that he would need to wrestle in a mask and had not brought one with him. This led to a frantic search for a suitable mask or an improvised solution, resulting in him wearing one that did not fit properly and repeatedly slipped off during the match.
”FantasticaMania viewers know Ultimo Guerrero wrestling masked is usually not an issue – as best I know – Ultimo Guerrero was not aware he was going to be asked to wrestle masked and did not bring one with him. That led to a mad scramble to find a mask or mask up a mask, and Ultimo Guerrero ended up wearing a mask that wasn’t really suitable and would not stay on his head.”
In an effort to prevent the mask from dislodging, Guerrero reportedly omitted several planned spots, impacting the overall quality of the match. Despite potential editing attempts, the mask issues persisted, preventing the match from showcasing.
We will have to wait and see if AEW will end up booking Ultimo Guerrero and Kazuchika Okada again in the future as it is clear the two men were able to have a worthwhile match this time around.
