CM Punk’s arrival in AEW was initially met with immense fanfare, heralding what many hoped would be a triumphant chapter in his storied career. However, his tenure with the company took an unexpected downturn, ultimately leading to his release last year. In fact, Jim Ross wishes CM Punk was still with AEW even now.

In 2021, CM Punk made significant impact by joining AEW, swiftly becoming central figure in the promotion. His crowning achievement came at Double or Nothing 2022 when he won the AEW World Championship. However, his reign was plagued by injuries, including torn triceps, following the controversial Brawl Out incident at AEW All Out 2022.

Despite these setbacks, Punk returned to the spotlight in June 2023 as a key figure on AEW Collision. Unfortunately, his time with AEW came to an abrupt end due to an incident involving Jack Perry, resulting in the termination of his contract. CM Punk would then return to WWE at Survivor Series last year.

During a recent episode of Grilling JR, Jim Ross shared his thoughts on Punk’s transition back to WWE and wished Punk was still there in AEW. Ross mentioned that he frequently receives text messages from Punk, who checks in on his well-being.

I get text messages from him on a somewhat frequent basis because he’s just checking on me to see how I’m feeling.

Good ol’ JR admired Punk for his contributions to AEW and expressed his wish for Punk to remain with the company. He felt sad about the inability to retain such a high-caliber talent, attributing Punk’s departure to a personality mismatch.

I miss CM Punk. I thought he contributed greatly to the AEW roster when he was with us. To be perfectly candid, I wish he still was. How do you not want a talent the level of CM Punk not still with your company? It, personality-wise, just did not work out, and that’s unfortunate.

CM Punk also snubbed AEW in big way, as it is clear he wants nothing to do with AEW anymore. Regardless, both parties have now moved on from the whole situation and that’s all that matters.
