The fall of WCW has resurfaced as a prominent topic of discussion, particularly due to the ‘Who Killed WCW?’ docuseries, where Vince Russo features prominently. Recently, Russo made a bold claim regarding his on-screen character during his tenure in WCW, and now he has doubled down and emphasized the validity of this claim.

In the VICE docuseries “Who Killed WCW?”, Vince Russo has been a central figure, defending his legacy amidst criticisms from fans and fellow wrestling veterans who worked with him during his time at WCW. Despite the company’s decline in quality under his watch, Russo staunchly denies being responsible for WCW’s downfall.

One of Russo’s boldest claims during the series is regarding his on-air character, where he claimed that he was superior to the majority of the WCW roster at that time. This bold claim sparked considerable debate and controversy within the wrestling community, and a ton of backlash too.

“I’m just going to be one thousand percent completely honest with you: as far as an on-air character? I felt that I was better than 80% of that roster,” Russo boldly claimed. The criticism Russo faces is often due to him booking himself onto the show and putting the WCW World Championship around his own waist, however, he explained that happened on the receiving end of a ton of pressure. “I made the mistake of saying ‘You know what? ‘F it, if you want ratings, I will go out there and get ratings myself. I almost got killed, bro. I almost got killed!”

Following all the backlash he got, Vince Russo took to Twitter and defiantly stood by his controversial statement regarding his talent level compared to others, particularly during his tenure at WCW. He talked about the expansive size of WCW’s roster at the time, suggesting that his comment should be viewed in that context. Unapologetic about his assertion, Russo boldly stated that he speaks sincerely and isn’t backing down from his statements.

Russo then pointed out the lasting impact of his persona, claiming that even after twenty-five years, there are still people who believe in his portrayal and the character he embodied

”Wow, some can’t handle the “I was better than 80% of the Talent” Comment. Remember—WCW had a VERY BIG ROSTER. Am I sorry I said it? Not at all. I don’t say anything I don’t mean. It’s all on Peacock—I’ll let my heat Speak for itself. Matter of Fact, I was so convincing that some TWENTY-FIVE YEARS LATER—People STILL BELIEVE I was That Guy. Marks.”

Vince Russo definitely stands as a polarizing figure in wrestling history, a fact made obvious by his ongoing defense of his creative decisions amidst the controversies and risks associated with his time at WCW. His tenure continues to create debate and divide opinions among fans and wrestling insiders alike. Russo couldn’t care less what other people have to say about his time in WCW and that’s unlikely to change anytime soon.
