The legendary Undertaker has retired from in-ring competition in 2020. In his absence, WWE’s rising star, Gunther, has risen to prominence within WWE and has become one of its top-tier superstars.
The Ring General held a record-breaking reign as the WWE Intercontinental Champion and won the 2024 King of the Ring tournament. He has built a reputation as a formidable powerhouse, whom The Undertaker has also backed and is known for his punishing chops.
During a recent appearance on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, The Undertaker shared his thoughts on chops in wrestling. The Deadman recalled telling Ric Flair, “You get three chops,” but admitted Flair likely delivered more. He also allowed Shawn Michaels to chop him considerably during their matches.
The Undertaker expressed a preference for safely receiving genuine hits over poorly executed punches, emphasizing that he would instead be hit properly to ensure the match looked good. Despite his general aversion to chops, The Phenom mentioned that he would relish the opportunity to work with Gunther and would willingly endure Gunther’s brutal chops for the sake of the match.
“I’m not fond of chops at all. I did work Flair. I told Flair he gets three. I think I ended up giving him more. ‘You get three chops.’ I’m pretty sure he got more than three [laughs]. I let Shawn (Michaels) chop me up pretty good, too. It’s a weird deal with me. I’d rather get a potato than for a punch to look bad. I’d rather you hit me, hit me in a safe spot, but hit me, and we’ll get by. I’d rather the match be good than me selling a punch that misses by six inches. Guys spend all this time working on their punches and trying to work light and then just knock the crap out of you with a chop. It was just a thing. I would love, right now, to be able to work with Gunther. I would let him chop the shit out of me. I would love to work with him,”
While The Undertaker has no plans to come out of retirement for now, a showdown between Gunther and Taker in his prime would indeed have been a blockbuster match for the ages.
