WWE Hall of Famer ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin has accomplished everything one would want to accomplish as a professional wrestler, but his promo game was what truly set him apart from the rest. In fact, Austin helped Chael Sonnen with his promos for a UFC fight.
Chael Sonnen earned himself several significant fights in his MMA career by leveraging his ability to capture attention with his words. One notable instance was at UFC 159, where Sonnen effectively talked his way into a bout with UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones.
While speaking to FLAGRANT, Sonnen was asked if he drew inspiration from professional wrestlers during his MMA career. He admitted to occasionally asking himself, “What would Stone Cold do?” when faced with certain situations.
Sonnen even recounted calling ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin for advice on how to handle situations, particularly in his feud with Jon Jones. Austin offered him a few promo ideas, although Sonnen ultimately chose not to use them.
“I would definitely ask myself, ‘What would Stone Cold?’ in this situation. I would sometimes even call Stone Cold and say, ‘In this situation, how would you handle this? Your character. How would that happen?’ He gave me a couple of promos for Jon Jones. It was more ideas. I ended up not even using it. I called him, he answered the phone, and I was like, ‘this guy is a lot younger and bigger.’ He says, ‘I’m driving down the road right now. Two lane road with a yellow stripe down the middle. It reminds me of Jon Jones. That yellow stripe down his back.’ He starts cutting a promo, but it’s what is actually happening. It was more to turn my brain as to what a promo was and what people wanted to hear.”
As for The Texas Rattlesnake, he addressed having one more match after WrestleMania 38. Regardless, Austin’s influence truly runs deep and transcended beyond the world of professional wrestling and that’s all that matters to him.
