Jeff Cobb, one of NJPW’s top stars, was widely expected to participate in the AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door pay-per-view on June 30th, especially after issuing a bold open challenge. However, it seems no one from the AEW locker room has stepped up to face him.
Following his successful title defense at NJPW Dominion, Jeff Cobb threw down the gauntlet, challenging any member of The Elite to a singles match at Forbidden Door. He declared, “If you’re Elite, challenge me. Bring it on. The big shiny golden belt that symbolizes NJPW TV is calling. I’ll make you famous.”
In a conversation with Steve Fall for Ringside News, Jeff Cobb discussed potential opponents for Forbidden Door and speculated that AEW stars might need permission from Tony Khan to accept his challenge.
“Funny story, you know, I don’t know if they have to get permission from their daddy over there. It’s whatever, you know what I’m saying? I love a fight, I don’t mind a fight. If I lose a fight, that’s totally fine because I will dust up and come back and fight you again. So I’m all for it. My open challenge is there, forbidden door season is just around the corner, I believe like 10 days away or so, maybe 12 depending on when this comes out. Yeah, and nobody stepped up to challenge,” Cobb expressed.
Cobb emphasized his surprise and disappointment at the lack of responses, especially given the Forbidden Door’s concept of promoting cross-promotional matches. He shared his bemusement that no one had shown interest in facing him, despite his clear willingness to compete.
“As of now, nobody stepped up. So as of right now, I plan on just going to the beach, hanging out, and working on my tan. Like, I have to work on my tan? I don’t, but you can never be too tan in this business,” Cobb joked.
Fans are eager to see if someone will eventually accept Jeff Cobb’s challenge, as his absence from the event would be a significant surprise. Stay tuned for updates on whether Cobb will secure a match at the highly anticipated AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door pay-per-view.
