The Undertaker was highly regarded as one of the best in-ring performers during his prime. Over the years, he was known to deliver some power-packed moves such as the Chokeslam and Tombstone Piledriver.
It was in the mid-2000s that The Phenom began to explore more in-ring moves and added the Hell’s Gate submission hold to his arsenal, which was a deadly triangle choke to tap out opponents.
In a recent conversation with Chris Van Vliet, The Undertaker disclosed the reason for adding the Hell’s Gate submission hold as part of his signature moves. Taker stated that his years of injuries had taken a toll on him at the time, and he faced difficulties picking up opponents for powerful moves like he did back in the day.
That led to The Undertaker drawing out a plan to add more moves to his arsenal to combat different opponents without the risk of injuring them by executing his trademark moves the wrong way.
“I added Hells Gate in there because I was so beat up and couldn’t pick guys up and throw them around like I used to. So I had to figure out a way – how to be beat Khali? Right? You choke him out. So that was kind of self preservation figuring out different ways to beat different guys without risking giving them a bad Tombstone.”
Additionally, The Undertaker envisioned Cody Rhodes as a massive heel in the same interview, as part of the regular insights that he likes to give since his retirement in 2020. Moreover, while he stated that he wanted to wrestle again, he could not do it again due to certain reasons.
However, should The Phenom decide to lace up his boots once again after careful evaluations, the fans would surely be enthralled to see The Undertaker wrestle one more match and potentially use his signature Hell’s Gate again.
What are your thoughts on the reason stated by The Undertaker to add Hell’s Gate to his arsenal? Do you think it was his signature move, much like the Tombstone Piledriver and Chokeslam? Sound off in the comments!
