Chad Gable was originally portrayed as the resilient babyface but never managed to beat Gunther for the Intercontinental Title. After losing a Gauntlet match, he shifted his focus to training Sami Zayn, who eventually managed to defeat for the title. Gable then turned heel on Zayn and Gable has now revealed who came up with his heel turn in the first place.
Gable’s own quest for the WWE Intercontinental Championship at the April 15th edition of Raw in Montreal ended in disappointment against Zayn. This setback proved to be a turning point as Gable snapped and viciously attacked Zayn in front of his own family.
While speaking to The Gorilla Position, Gable revealed that the decision to turn heel was largely his own idea. He felt his character had stagnated as a babyface, especially after coming up short in critical matches. The opportunity to execute the turn in Montreal, Zayn’s hometown right after WrestleMania, felt like perfect timing. Gable believed this change was necessary for the audience to continue investing in his character.
“The whole idea to turn heel was kind of my idea. I felt like I flatlined as a babyface somewhere around WrestleMania. I came up short against Gunther a few times. Came up short against Sami. At a certain point, something has to change, or people are not going to buy into you any further. I had the idea, ‘Let’s do it,’ it just so happened we were going to be in Montreal, Sami’s hometown, the week after Mania when I was having that match. I was like, ‘there could not be a better place to do this thing.’ We made it happen and the stars aligned. I feel like it’s worked out in our favor. Since then, Otis is this perfect sympathetic guy that you can’t help buy feel bad for. We have everything in our favor working for us.”
Unfortunately for Chad Gable, he was unable to defeat Sami Zayn for the Intercontinental Championship at Clash at The Castle. We’ll have to see how his storyline with Otis and Sami Zayn will progress in the coming weeks, as it is clear WWE has big plans for Gable.
