AEW President Tony Khan has often been the target of criticism from both online commentators and industry veterans. While Khan is generally seen as a well-intentioned leader, concerns about his booking decisions, especially from former AEW talent, are frequently raised. In fact, he has been called out for his lack of management skills.
In a recent virtual signing with “K&S WrestleFest,” former AEW commentator Kevin Kelly shared his perspective on working under Khan. Reflecting on comments made by former AEW star Frankie Kazarian, who described his AEW experience as akin to “inmates running the asylum,” Kelly provided his own insights.
“The ‘inmates running the asylum,’ for me, is—and it could have been when Frankie was there, again, our paths didn’t cross there, we were great friends—but maybe it was during his tenure.“
Kelly elaborated on his time in AEW, emphasizing how everything revolved around Khan. He, like many others, questioned why Khan doesn’t delegate more, especially given the number of seasoned veterans he has employed.
While I was there, it was a lot of, ‘Hurry up and wait for Tony Khan to make a decision.’ Because every decision went through him. You know, picking out the color of the paint on the wall, you know what I mean?” said Kelly. “He has good people, he has tons of good people involved, why couldn’t he delegate more? Well, because … You have to ask him. And that’s where it is.”
Even The Undertaker questions Tony Khan’s ability as a leader. Nevertheless, we’ll have to wait and see if Tony Khan will eventually get better at managing everything in his company as he is clearly lacking in that department right now for many people.
