NXT has seen a ton of development over the past couple of years after Shawn Michaels took over the brand and this is especially true for the growth of the women’s division. In fact, Michaels recently stated that introducing the NXT Women’s North American Title was an easy decision for him.
Shawn Michaels emphasized the logical decision behind introducing a new title in the NXT women’s division, following the crowning of the inaugural Women’s NXT North American Champion at Battleground on Sunday night. Kelani Jordan emerged victorious in a ladder match against Sol Ruca, Michin, Lash Legend, Jaida Parker, and Fallon Henley to secure the title.
In an interview with Sportsnet, Michaels described the addition of the women’s North American title as a natural progression for NXT, which already boasts a men’s North American championship. He expressed confidence in the depth of talent within the NXT women’s division, stating that it supports the introduction of another prestigious singles championship.
Michaels commended WWE’s recruiting efforts, particularly in identifying and nurturing talent from collegiate sports backgrounds. He praised the athletes for their rapid adaptation to professional wrestling, even if it was a departure from their previous athletic endeavors.
“From the very beginning, from the recruiting process — I don’t know any other way to say it, but just so many stud athletes out there. Gosh, I don’t want to create a competition I guess — or a negative one — with the men or anything. But, again, it’s just amazing, some of the extremely athletic and talented women that are out there. And how quickly they’re adjusting and adapting to learning this if it’s something that they haven’t watched a lot or grown up with.
It’s one of those things, again, it’s a word that gets tossed around, but it’s true, has just happened organically. And clearly our women — as are all women — are on the same level as the men. It was only fitting that we have a North American Men’s Champion, we should have a North American Women’s Champion. And clearly NXT has the depth of a roster that can sustain that. So, for me, it was an easy call. And, again, very proud of not just our women’s division but of all of our women that come through here in NXT.”
Kelani Jordan even got customized side plates for her NXT Women’s North American Championship. We will have to wait and see how the women will continue to develop in NXT, as it is quite clear Shawn Michaels sees great things in them.
