The fall of WCW is a significant topic within the wrestling community, and there are numerous factors attributed to its demise. While Vince Russo is often cited as a key figure in WCW’s decline due to his creative decisions and booking style during his tenure with the company, Russo himself may have a different perspective on who is to blame for WCW’s downfall.

As previously reported, the ”Who Killed WCW?” docuseries was produced by Dwayne Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions and the series premiered on June 4 on VICE TV.

Vince Russo, who served as a writer and on-screen talent for WCW from October 1999 to October 2000, recently addressed the company’s downfall in light of a new four-part WCW documentary series.

While speaking on Sportskeeda’s The Wrestling Outlaws, Vince Russo shared his perspective on the role of television executive Jamie Kellner in WCW’s demise. Russo believes that Kellner, the former Chairman and CEO of Turner Broadcasting System, Inc., played a significant part by no longer wanting WCW on television.

“Bro, from what I understand, it was some dude by the name of Jamie Kellner. I think Jamie Kellner was an executive that he made the decision to pull the trigger.”

According to Vince Russo, the AOL merger and a lack of executive interest in professional wrestling were key factors that led to WCW’s sale to rival WWE. Russo asserts that the executives involved, particularly following the AOL merger, had little interest in the wrestling business and even viewed it as an embarrassment.

”They didn’t wanna be in the wrestling business, bro. It’s that simple, especially when that merger was made with AOL and a whole different set of people came in. Wrestling was an embarrassment to them. They looked down their nose at wrestling, bro. They didn’t wanna be in the wrestling business.”

Tony Schiavone also defended Vince Russo after all the criticism Russo got for WCW’s demise. Nevertheless, Vince Russo will always be attributed to WCW’s downfall and that’s unlikely to ever change.
