AEW is gearing up to present its annual collaborative pay-per-view show with NJPW, titled Forbidden Door. The show is set to take place on June 30, 2024, at the UBS Arena in the Long Island hamlet of Elmont, New York.
Not only that, this year’s Forbidden Door would see participation from other promotions as well, notably the Mexican promotion, CMLL. To build hype for the grand spectacle, AEW programming has seen the an influx of Mexican wrestlers recently.
According to the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the updated policy, subject to negotiations between AEW, CMLL, and New Japan, allows Mexican-born wrestlers who have not recently worked for AAA to appear on shows featuring CMLL talent. This policy is expected to apply to events like Forbidden Door. Sources indicate that stars like Rey Fenix, who hasn’t wrestled for AAA in a long time, are permitted to appear on these shows. Conversely, AEW star, Rush’s situation differs. Although he was present at the event, he did not wrestle.
Furthermore, it has been confirmed that, unless there are changes, Komander, who currently holds the AAA Cruiserweight title, and El Hijo del Vikingo, when he is healthy, will not be allowed to participate in shows featuring CMLL talent. Consistency suggests that Bandido, upon his return, should be categorized similarly to Rey Fenix.
“The updated policy is that, and things are subject to negotiations with AEW, CMLL and New Japan, seems to be that people who have not worked for AAA of late but are Mexican born will be allowed to appear on shows with CMLL talent. The belief is that will include Forbidden Door. We were told that because Fenix hasn’t wrestled in AAA for such a long time that his appearing on the show was fine. Rush was a different situation, as he was on the show, but didn’t wrestle. It is confirmed that unless things change, that Komander, since he holds the AAA cruiserweight title, would not be allowed to work on shows with CMLL talent, nor would El Hijo del Vikingo when he is healthy. If things are consistent, Bandido, when he’s back, should fit into the category with Fenix.”
Despite this new policy for Mexican wrestlers, which does allow some talented stars to appear on AEW show, AEWxNJPW Forbidden Door has announced an exciting lineup, and new reports suggest strong ticket sales for the grand spectacle.
Moreover, this could be one of the most stellar shows produced by the two top giants in the history of professional wrestling, so it will be interesting to witness the action go down at the end of this month in the Big Apple.
