The land of AEW is currently the house of the World Champion Swerve Strickland. He has been riding the wave of momentum as champion and is set for a major title defense on the upcoming edition of AEW Dynamite.
During a recent interview on the Busted Open Radio, Swerve described his approach to maintaining an unpredictable presence in professional wrestling. He noted that there is a time ticker for his screen appearance, popping up multiple times a night in various promos and often delivering live shots with a sense of immediacy.
Citing the same, Strickland revealed that the final promo on the June 1st edition of AEW Collision, which aired at the end of the show, was shot at his house the day before. The AEW World Champion emphasized his willingness to do whatever is needed to stay presentable and available at any time.
“There is literally a time ticker for when I’m about to pop up on screen. I’m popping up on the screen like three times a night and different promos. I’m giving live promo shots. ‘We have to shoot it now.’ Okay, boom. I’m having a presence on Collision, even when I’m not there. The last promo on Collision that ended the show, I shot that in my house the day before just because. ‘Whatever y’all need.’ I like to keep myself presentable at any time.”
Furthermore, Strickland also called himself the “Boogeyman of pro wrestling” because of his unpredictable appearance. He enjoyed the element of surprise, popping up when least expected, such as during Samoa Joe’s match against Dustin Rhodes. According to him, surprise appearances added intrigue, allowing viewers to use their imagination and stay engaged with the show.
“I call myself the Boogeyman of pro wrestling for a reason. You say my name and I pop up. I like the factor of you never know when I’m going to pop up. When Samoa Joe faced Dustin Rhodes at the end of the show, I popped up again. I like that factor of you never know when I’m going to pop up, if I pop up at all. Keep watching because sometimes not being announced is a good thing too, to keep you wondering, ‘They said his name. Is that going to have implications in this segment with this character?’ Sometimes, I don’t like leading people on to what is about to happen. Sometimes it’s a good thing. Sometimes, just let people watch and leave them to their own imagination.”
Swerve Strickland was also spotted at the premiere of the “House of the Dragon” season 2 recently. With Strickland firing at all cylinders to become a top champion in the industry, it will be interesting to see his journey forward as the AEW World Champion.
