Nigel McGuinness has been part of the AEW family for well over two years now and his commentary contributions are definitely one of the best things in the company right now. He hasn’t competed in the ring in a long time and it appears AEW had plans for him to compete last year.

Nigel McGuinness has provided commentary for both ROH and AEW Collision, but fans wondered whether he would actually return to the squared circle. That never happened as McGuinness confirmed a match with Bryan Danielson was not going to happen at AEW All In due to Danielson’s injury.

During a Q&A session on Fightful Select’s podcast, Sean Ross Sapp was asked about Nigel McGuinness never wrestling in AEW. Sapp revealed that a match with McGuinness was supposed to happen last year and he was even in shape for it, but lots of factors ultimately led to the plan being scrapped.

“I will have a report on that sometime relatively soon. It was supposed to happen last year. He got in shape for it and unfortunately, a lot needed to be shuffled, and they couldn’t do that.”

Interestingly enough, Nigel McGuinness revealed that he got back into the ring earlier this year. Bryan Danielson would also admit he is afraid of fan expectations if he and McGuinness ever square off against each other again, so it’s not known whether the two will duke it out in AEW.
