Athena is one of the cornerstones of Tony Khan’s Ring of Honor roster, which is the sister promotion to his main company. However, there have been rumors circulating that she suffered an ankle injury during an ROH TV taping on May 16.

The former WWE superstar who belives she thrived in the outside world better, faced Viva Van in a Proving Ground match, where a win or draw for Van would earn her a shot at the ROH Women’s World Championship. During the match, Van successfully applied an armbar, but Athena countered with a powerbomb on the floor.

When Athena charged at Van, Van ducked, causing Athena to fall outside the ring awkwardly. Athena re-entered the ring in visible pain, favoring one leg. Following that, they quickly went to the finish, with Athena securing a knockout blow to win while barely putting weight on her injured leg.

According to the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Athena’s ankle injury isn’t as severe as initially feared, and she is expected to return in a few weeks.

“Athena’s injury, which was to her ankle, isn’t as bad as feared, and is expected back in a few weeks.”

The former Ember Moon, who has held the ROH Women’s World Championship for 533 days, should have ample time to recover before her next major title defense at Death Before Dishonor on July 26 with no current indication that she will miss the pay-per-view event.
