Since its inception in 2019, AEW has been on a long journey, marked by substantial growth and success. The peak of its accomplishments was evident at the All Out 2021 event. However, there has been a gradual decline in momentum since then. Like any organization, AEW faces its own set of challenges, including the ongoing struggle to consistently sell tickets for their live shows. There’s also been a lot of online discourse because of this and Tony Khan has now claimed AEW is very successful despite the discourse.
For a very long time now, unflattering photos of AEW shows have become a topic of discussion online as dwindling attendance for the shows has only given rise to a lot of discourse online and criticism as well.
While speaking to Shakiel Mahjouri of CBS Sports, AEW President Tony Khan addressed AEW’s decline in live attendance and the negativity surrounding it. Khan stated that AEW is quite successful right now and that people would only push a negative story further than a positive story.
“We’re actually having a lot of success with a lot of live events and it’s just the nature of online discourse but I think people will always push a negative story further than a positive story — We’ve pulled some of the biggest gates in the history of pro-wrestling in the past year, set attendance records in many cities, but I think the nature of being AEW and the nature of online discourse and all these things coming together, there’s always going to be people trying to chase you down and talk about the cons instead of the pros.”
However, there’s concern that AEW’s current attendance figures could parallel WCW’s decline in 2000, raising concerns about the company’s future. Time will reveal whether AEW can overcome these challenges, especially considering the recent improvements in their product.
