Mercedes Mone’s journey back to the ring after her ankle injury has been filled with challenges, but she’s found support and encouragement along the way, particularly from former WWE talent Tyler Breeze.
Following her serious ankle injury during the NJPW STRONG Women’s Championship match against Willow Nightingale at the May 21, 2023 NJPW Resurgence event, Mone faced a daunting road to recovery. However, one year later, she’s poised to return to the ring at AEW’s Double or Nothing pay-per-view, where she’ll vie for Willow Nightingale’s TBS Championship.
In an interview with Joseph Staszewski of the New York Post, Mone opened up about her initial anxieties upon returning to training post-injury. She credited Tyler Breeze, a former WWE NXT Tag Team Champion, for helping her regain her confidence during these training sessions.
“When I first started to train, just running ropes hurt and that scared me. I’m like, ‘No way I’m going the path to feel this pain my whole life.’ Finally, it got better and little things stopped hurting and finally Breeze pushed me to do some of my moves that I was gonna do like double knees and going off the top rope. I hit them, so the fear was gone. Everything felt back to normal and I’m ready.”
Although Breeze is not currently under a talent contract with WWE, he remains involved with the company as a member of the UpUpDownDown YouTube brand.
In addition to Breeze, Mone also received training support from former WWE star Lince Dorado and SCRYPTS during her wrestling hiatus. Their collective guidance and encouragement played a crucial role in her journey back to the squared circle.
