Rey Mysterio is at loggerheads with his estranged son Dominik Mysterio after he betrayed him two years ago to join The Judgment Day and make his own identity. Despite that and Rey himself believing that it was the best thing for his son, he recently shared the advice he and others gave to Dominik Mysterio at the start of his WWE career on handling criticism.
Dominik Mysterio began his training in 2018 under the guidance of Jay Lethal, Rey Mysterio, and others. He then made his in-ring debut at WWE SummerSlam in 2020, facing Seth “Freakin” Rollins in a Street Fight and later on went on to win the WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championships with his father at At WWE Backlash in 2021.
The Master of the 619 recently opened up about the guidance given to Dominik early in his WWE journey in an interview with Shakiel Mahjouri of CBS Sports. Rey stated that he advised Dominik to hear criticism from one ear and let it pass from the other and only keep his focus on achieving his goals.
“I told my son this before he even started wrestling. Not only me, but one of his trainers, Lance Storm, when he was training in Canada, also told him. ‘There will be many comparisons between you and your father. Let them go in one ear and out the other. Stay focused on your path and goals. Do what you believe is best for you. Take advice, but ultimately, dissect it and figure it out yourself. I’ve never paid attention to negativity in my career or life. I’ve always pushed it aside or shaken it off. I remember telling Dom a few times, ‘Keep going. Keep doing what you feel is right.’ When he joined the Judgment Day, much of the advice no longer came from me. We were separate, and he was finding his own way. That was probably the best thing that could have happened.
Furthermore, Rey Mysterio also highlighted the positive influence of the people around Dominik in WWE, namely his Judgment Day cohorts and others he worked with such as Roman Reigns, Usos, and Edge.
“I think Dom is surrounded by great people. Finn, Damian, and others he worked with, like Usos, Roman, and Edge, all gave him advice. He was able to take the right advice and ignore the negativity that surfaced.”
Rey Mysterio and Dominik Mysterio now find themselves on the same brand, RAW, courtesy of the WWE Draft 2024. Despite wrestling for three decades, Mysterio is going strong and recently namedropped an opponent for his retirement match when the time comes. Moreover, with father and son again on the same landscape, we will have to wait and see if WWE reignites their rivalry.
