Gunther’s reign as the WWE Intercontinental Champion, which commenced in June 2022, etched his name in the annals of wrestling history as the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion ever. However, this impressive reign came to a shocking end at WrestleMania 40 and Sami Zayn has now made an interesting claim about the match.
Under the mentorship of Chad Gable, Sami Zayn faced Gunther for the Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania 40. Despite Gunther’s display of dominance throughout the match, Zayn’s unwavering determination ultimately proved decisive. With a flurry of powerful Helluva Kicks, Zayn secured the victory, bringing an end to Gunther’s illustrious reign as Intercontinental Champion.
Unsurprisingly, there was a ton of backlash for this decision since many felt Chad Gable should have won instead. Leading up to the King and Queen of the Ring Premium Live Event in Saudi Arabia, Sami Zayn sat down for an interview with Arab News.
Sami Zayn shared his thoughts on the current wrestling landscape, expressing that one of the greatest challenges is creating matches and moments that will stand the test of time. Despite this difficulty, Zayn expressed confidence that his WrestleMania match against Gunther would be “very well remembered.”
”I feel like the hardest thing to do nowadays is to have a memorable match and memorable moments that people will remember, oh, two, three, four, five, maybe even 10 years down the road. And I feel like that match (against Gunther at WrestleMania 40) was good, if nothing else because of how long he held the title. I feel like it’ll be very well remembered. So I’m very proud of that.”
Gunther also previously stated that Sami Zayn wasn’t the only right choice to dethrone him. Regardless, Zayn is now focused on defending his title against Chad Gable and Bronson Reed at King & Queen of The Ring on May 25th, so we’ll have to see if he will be able to retain his Intercontinental Championship.
