Randy Orton commands respect not only from wrestling enthusiasts but also from every wrestler in WWE and beyond, even if some people aren’t fans of Orton. Orton also reflected on his wrestling journey with a recognition that he might not have had the same level of determination to succeed if he hadn’t received assistance along the way.
Back in 2000, Orton entered WWE’s Ohio Valley Wrestling developmental system, a move facilitated by his father, wrestling legend Bob Orton Jr., who recommended him for the opportunity. Transitioning to the main roster in 2002, he quickly rose to prominence, becoming one of the most iconic wrestlers of his generation.
During a recent Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling event, Randy Orton and his father Bob Orton spoke to Bill Apter. Delving into his wrestling origins, Orton acknowledged the significant role his family legacy played in opening doors for him within the industry, admitting nepotism played a huge role.
“He [Bob Orton Jr.] got me in, and it’s because of his hard work and all those sacrifices and all that time away from home that I’m here. So, if anything, thank you, Dad, for everything that you did throughout the years. You got me right in that door, man. I know a lot of guys that have that hustle, that have had to find their own way into the business. I don’t know that I have that [hustle], just being honest, so I don’t know that I would have found my way into the ring without you, so I’m very lucky to have you, Grandpa, Uncle Barry. Yeah, yeah, yeah, thank you.”
Orton also inducted his father into the St. Louis Wrestling Hall of Fame recently. Randy Orton qualified for the semifinals in The King of The Ring tournament last week on Friday Night SmackDown, so we’ll have to see how The Viper will fare this week in the semifinals. No matter what, he is always grateful for the opportunity he got to work in WWE and that’s all that matters.
