AEW President Tony Khan, known for his wrestling passion, faced a Twitter controversy impacting his reputation earlier this year. This wasn’t even the first time he got embroiled in controversy either but now Khan has claimed social media debates make for healthy competition.
Tony Khan previously compared WWE to Harvey Weinstein and this comment led to a ton of backlash as well. Regardless, Khan knows how to make headlines and fans are aware of that now.
While speaking on The Rocker Morning Show, Tony Khan was asked if he thought the shots between WWE and AEW were healthy or if they were not a good thing.
Tony Khan acknowledges that the competitive banter and social media exchanges between the two companies can fuel interest and engagement among fans, drawing parallels to the rivalries and debates seen in traditional sports. That’s why he believes social media debates foster healthy competition.
”In the 90’s, certainly, I do think a lot of that helped fuel the wresting economy, but it was a very different time and things weren’t all online. Everybody wasn’t online all the time. It was a very different time for wrestling and a different time to be a sports fan. It’s changed for sports. Those rivalries and debates in sports are healthy. I think for wrestling, too, it’s a big part, for better or worse of wrestling fandom now. It’s definitely a way that people keep up on the shows and watch the shows. For me, I’m a big fan of that. I love promoting the shows online. I know that our wrestlers are really engaged socially. It makes for healthy competition, I think.”
WWE’s reaction to Tony Khan’s comments were also revealed and they were as expected. Regardless, Tony Khan is currently involved in The Elite’s storyline against Team AEW, so we’ll have to see what the payoff will be.
