Any young aspirant who wishes to make a name for themselves in the same industry as their parent can be a double-edged sword of opportunities and struggles at the same time. The same can be said for WWE Hall of Famer, Rey Mysterio who believes that his separation from his son, Dominik Mysterio was ultimately the best thing for his son’s career.
Dominik Mysterio began making regular appearances on WWE programming alongside his father in 2019. His first official match for the company took place at SummerSlam 2020 against Seth Rollins, and moving forward, the father-son duo went on to win the SmackDown Tag Team Titles in 2021.
However, Dominik’s true evolution began when he turned on his father, Rey Mysterio at the Clash at the Castle 2022 event. Dominik subsequently joined the Judgement Day faction and under the tutelage of his beloved Mami, Rhea Ripley, became one of the most despised WWE superstars of all time and developed an identity distinct from his legendary father.
The former WWE Champion recently appeared on the JAXXON PODCAST, where he elaborated on the struggles his son and now Judgment Day faction member, Dominik Mysterio, faced early in his career due to inevitable comparisons to his legendary father.
“The career that I’ve had, the longevity—starting at the age of 14, and now being 49. I’ve been grinding in this business for the past 35 years. For my son to come in out of nowhere and not have my style, with a different build—he’s 6’1″ and about 190 pounds—it was very hard for him at the beginning to try to adapt and find his role as a wrestler. Comparisons were made, and of course, he couldn’t live up to them. Not until we separated and he continued on his own path without having his dad by his side. That was the best thing that could have ever happened to him.”
Dominik Mysterio is currently dealing with an arm injury and also once again finds himself on the same brand as his father, Rey Mysterio courtesy of the WWE Draft 2024. So we will have to wait and see if WWE chooses to revisit their classic one-on-one rivalry from last year once again.
