Jim Ross has been the voice of several generations of fans, dedicating decades of his life to the business. He’s obviously an integral part of AEW and has now revealed why he didn’t assume a Talent Relations role in AEW as he did for so long in WWE.
Earlier this year, Jim Ross inked a one-year deal with the company, marking his return to an active role on the commentary team. Obviously, this made many fans happy and he even confirmed he will be part of the commentary team for pay-per-views going forward.
Good ol’ JR was the Head of Talent Relations in WWE for several years and was responsible for signing some of the greatest Superstars in the history of WWE. That’s why fans wondered if he would assume the same role in AEW, which he did not.
While speaking on his Grilling JR podcast, Jim Ross talked about his role as a commentator in AEW and why he didn’t assume a Talent Relations role in AEW. Ross noted that he had his fill of all that in WWE and simply wanted to go back to his roots as a commentator.
“I had no problem with that. I never signed up to be in charge of talent relations, and I did get that question a lot, and I still get it occasionally. But that was not my goal. My goal was to go back to my roots and be a broadcaster. That’s what brought me to the dance, and that’s the music I wanted to hear again. So, I had no issues with my assignment, none whatsoever, and working with new guys.
Yeah, I think so [had his fill of talent relations in WWE]. I think so. It just wasn’t something I was compelled to gravitate toward again. You know, the time I spent in talent relations in WWE were some of the most successful and productive times that anybody in my role could ever have.”
Jim Ross has also confirmed that 2024 will be his last year as commentator. Nonetheless, only time will tell whether Jim Ross will remain involved with AEW after his retirement.
