In 2020, Matt Cardona faced an unexpected setback when he was released from WWE. He used the release as motivation to become one of the biggest and most successful names in the indies, but he also suffered a torn pec injury recently and has now revealed how it happened.
Matt Cardona was set to undergo surgery for a debilitating injury—a torn pectoral muscle. His condition affected his plans to compete in wXw Germany’s Drive of Champions show in June. Last month, Matt Cardona finally underwent the surgery as well.
Cardona appeared on Busted Open, chatting with Matt Camp and Bully Ray, where he discussed the torn pec injury that will keep him out of the ring for a few months. He explained how it happened, stating that it was when he clotheslined someone over the top rope.
”So, long story short, I clotheslined someone over the top rope and I tore my pec. Stuff happens, this ain’t ballet, nobody’s fault. It’s an unfortunate situation. There’s no good time to get injured. But this is not a good time, you know? Especially for me. But, I’m already back on the road making shows like you said. I’m the new General Manager of GCW so I’ll be out of in-ring competition for the next few months. But I’ll still be making towns. I’ve built up a skillset. I don’t need to wrestle. I can cut a promo, I can be the General Manager, I can do commentary, meet and greets. So, GCW this week, I was on the show more times than normal. I opened the show with a promo, I did commentary, I did backstage stuff, I came out at the end so, you know, yeah, of course I can wrestle but so can everybody — well, in theory, they should be able to. I can do everything else so that’s the appeal to me.”
Within Game Changer Wrestling, he took on the role of the promotion’s on-screen General Manager. Nonetheless, we will have to wait and see when Matt Cardona will be able to make his in-ring return after injury.
