Gunther’s reign as the WWE Intercontinental Champion made history as he became the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion ever. While he’s no longer the champion, it appears Gunther did get to compete in his first WWE World Heavyweight Championship match during a recent live event.
In the month since then, Gunther has made it clear he is focused on winning the King of The Ring tournament, especially now that he and Ludwig Kaiser kicked out Giovanni Vinci.
With Damian Priest as the WWE World Heavyweight Champion and set to defend his title against Jey Uso at Backlash this weekend, the potential future challengers are starting to take shape.
During the recent WWE Live Event in Bologna, Gunther got himself into the title picture, challenging Priest in a Fatal Four-Way match that also included Jey Uso and Chad Gable. This marked Gunther’s first-ever match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
Though Priest successfully retained his title, it is definitely a good sign to see that The Ring General compete for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, especially after Cody Rhodes expressed an interest in fighting Gunther. Regardless, we will have to wait and see how Gunther will fare in the King of The Ring tournament in the meantime.
