New Japan Pro-Wrestling revealed a shift in its leadership, with Hiroshi Tanahashi being appointed as the new President of the promotion. This decision was reached during a meeting of NJPW’s board of directors and shareholders on December 23, 2023. Tanahashi has now revealed why he is envious of WWE.
WWE has long been known for its multi-faceted development strategy, which has been honed over the decades to create wrestling stars, refine established talent, and attract athletes from diverse sporting backgrounds. This approach has given the company a reputation for its capacity to continuously produce new stars and cultivate a broad pool of talent.
Hiroshi Tanahashi recently spoke on Pivot Talk, highlighting the unique aspects of WWE’s development system that differ from traditional Japanese wrestling promotions.
Tanahashi admitted feeling envious of WWE’s rapid development of star wrestlers, which contrasts with the typically slower pace seen in Japanese wrestling promotions. The traditional Japanese approach involves a more gradual build-up, with wrestlers working their way through the ranks and gaining experience over time.
“I guess one thing that is helpful is that it’s open to both men and women, regardless of age.
“Also, the speed at which star wrestlers keep coming out, the speed of this turnover.
“This is again, a little bit different from the way it is done with Japanese promotions. Well, I do feel envious of that.”
We will have to wait and see whether NJPW and WWE will also end up working together somewhere down the line, as fans would love to see the two companies forming a working partnership.
