The reign of perhaps, the greatest World champion of the modern era, Roman Reigns came to its demise at the hands of Cody Rhodes who defeated him at WrestleMania 40 to win the Undisputed WWE Title and ended his reign after 1316 days.
The conclusion of The Tribal Chief’s historic tenure was orchestrated with the involvement of WWE Hall of Famer, The Undertaker, who made a pivotal appearance at WrestleMania 40 to intervene in the match and neutralize the threat of The Rock.
Reflecting on the backstage atmosphere following the main event on his Six Feet Under podcast, The Deadman highlighted the emotional resonance of Roman Reigns’ remarkable championship run after it ended with many people appreciating his hard work put in for years. He commended The Head of the Table for his ability to captivate audiences over an extended period, noting the complexities of maintaining fan engagement amidst today’s media landscape.
“There was a lot of really emotional moments backstage, as you can imagine. Roman coming back after, what an amazing run as champion. If you look at it and put it in today’s market, what a phenomenal run. It’s not going to go down in the record books as the longest world title run, but when you look at it in actuality, with as much coverage, as much media, as much exposure as you have now. Backlund’s run and Hogan’s early run, they didn’t have social media. They didn’t have as much live TV. (They wrestled jobbers) or didn’t wrestle at all on TV. The biggest part about that is to be able to maintain and keep the people’s interest in that storyline, for that long. There were so many layers to it. Kudos to him and everybody that worked on all that. It’s really difficult to do and difficult to do well. There was some really good storytelling involved in that.”
The Undertaker has his own history with Roman Reigns, from their memorable encounter at WrestleMania 33 where he handed in his second Mania defeat to their alliance at Extreme Rules 2019.
As Reigns transitions from his historic reign and being amidst a new acting project, his legacy as one of WWE’s most dominant champions is cemented, with his journey leaving an indelible mark on the wrestling landscape and endorsed by one of the greatest WWE superstars of all time, The Undertaker.
