Cody Rhodes finally conquered the Tribal Chief and finished his story to become the new Undisputed WWE Champion at WrestleMania 40. While the American Nightmare turned out to be the winner this time, Roman Reigns managed to put a massive scar on his career last year at the Grandest Stage of them All.
The main event of WrestleMania 40 turned out to be one of the most unexpected things in pro-wrestling history. However, not many expected Rhodes to be on the losing end in the main event of WrestleMania 39. As revealed on the most recent edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Cody Rhodes losing to Roman Reigns last year wasn’t always the plan.
Both Vince McMahon and Triple H were on board for Rhodes to finish his story last year. However, just to build Jey Uso as a singles star and put the whole Bloodline story in place, WWE booked a victory for Reigns.
“The original plan at last year’s WrestleMania was for Cody Rhodes to defeat Roman Reigns. Both Vince McMahon and Paul Levesque were on board with the return from pec surgery and the title win. A lot happened behind the scenes, with the key points being argued and eventually agreed by all parties it would be stronger a year later.”
“It was also argued that keeping Reigns as champion would open up a key storyline to make Jey Uso into a major singles star and merchandise draw as a babyface. While Vince did make the call, Levesque was on board with the call and there were no significant issues with the decision. It was said that it was absolutely not Vince overruling Levesque and forcing the decision.”
Though millions around the world didn’t like Cody Rhodes losing to Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 39, his win this year just got sweeter, thanks to that. In addition to that, the Bloodline story turned out to be one of the best storylines in the history of the industry. Ringside News will keep you updated on this story.
