After debuting in AEW to much fanfare, CM Punk’s tenure took a tumultuous turn when he was released from the company last year. In a recent revelation, Punk disclosed that he had actually requested his release from AEW before being approached for his return on AEW Collision.

CM Punk made a splash in 2021 by joining AEW and quickly becoming a focal point of the promotion. His crowning achievement came at Double or Nothing 2022 when he captured the AEW World Championship. However, his championship reign was marred by injuries, including a torn triceps and a suspension following the controversial Brawl Out incident at AEW All Out 2022.

Despite setbacks, Punk returned to the spotlight in June 2023 as a cornerstone of AEW Collision. However, his tenure with AEW came to an abrupt end due to an incident involving Jack Perry, leading to the termination of his contract.

While speaking on the MMA Hour, CM Punk talked about his time in AEW and revealed that he had requested Tony Khan for his release but Khan denied it by pitching AEW Collision.

“Just let me go, get me out of here.”

“No, I can’t let you go. We are going to do this new show.”

AEW talent also claimed that they miss CM Punk in the company. Nevertheless, Punk’s time in AEW will always be seen in a negative lens no matter what and that is never changing now.
