Gunther secured the WWE Intercontinental Championship in June 2022 and went on to become the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion in history. Interestingly enough, he will also be joining a very prestigious club at WrestleMania 40.
Gunther is gearing up for his next defense as the Intercontinental Champion, set to enter the squared circle at WWE WrestleMania 40 next weekend at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Scheduled to defend his title against Sami Zayn, who secured the opportunity after a victory in a gauntlet match on Monday Night Raw a few weeks ago. At last year’s WrestleMania 39, Gunther successfully defended his title against Drew McIntyre and Sheamus in a thrilling triple threat match.
WWE Stats took to Twitter and highlighted that Gunther is set to make history by joining an elite group of just four other stars who have defended the Intercontinental Title at WrestleMania multiple years in a row. This distinguished list includes Randy Savage, who achieved this feat in 1986 and 1987, followed by Ultimate Warrior in 1989 and 1990. Additionally, The Rock accomplished this milestone in 1997 and 1998.
”Superstars who defended the Intercontinental Championship at #WrestleMania, multiple years in a row: – Randy Savage, ‘86-‘87** – Ultimate Warrior, ‘89-‘90 – @TheRock , ‘97-‘98 – @Gunther_AUT , ‘23-‘24** **part of the same interrupted reign for both defenses”
Gunther also surpassed another prestigious milestone earlier this month. Nevertheless, we will have to wait and see whether The Ring General will successfully retain his title against Sami Zayn at WrestleMania 40.
