Pat McAfee, a familiar face on WWE television, had been absent for a while due to his non-WWE commitments. However, he made a triumphant return during the Royal Rumble and subsequently resumed his role on commentary for RAW. McAfee also shared that he received significant assistance from Paul Heyman during his WWE journey.
In the spring of 2022, it was announced that Pat McAfee would not only be providing commentary at WrestleMania 38 but would also be stepping into the ring to face off against Austin Theory in a singles match. The match was arranged by Vince McMahon, who was serving as a mentor to Theory at the time.
During a heated segment in the buildup to WrestleMania, Theory demanded an apology from McAfee for a previous attack. Reflecting on the moment on Friday’s edition of The Pat McAfee Show, McAfee shared how Paul Heyman assisted him with his promo before the segment.
“When I was having my run with Austin Theory, who I beat. There was a night where I was going to answer Austin Theory, he was going to ask me to apologize or something like that. Wiseman heard me in the corner thinking about how I was going to do it. He then just like, literally stops me, and says three lines. He’s like, ‘You’re sorry that his mom made a bitch, right? You’re sorry that he is insufferable, right? You’re sorry that he is the worst human being, right?’ I go, ‘I am sorry about all those things.’ He goes, ‘Precisely.’ Then he just walked away. I go out there, take all his shit, and the internet is like, ‘Pat is one of the best promos in the game.’ I told Paul, ‘I’m going on my show tomorrow and I’m saying you’re the one who told me that. I don’t want to get your pop.’ He goes, ‘No, at some point later.’ Today is the day. We all appreciate the hell out of you, congrats on going into the Hall of Fame.”
McAfee emerged victorious against Theory at WrestleMania before facing Vince McMahon in an impromptu singles match, where he came up short. Following the match, Stone Cold Steve Austin made a memorable appearance, delivering stunners to all three men involved in the altercation.
