Sting has proven himself as one of the greatest wrestling stars of all time, not only for his spectacular career, longevity, and memorable moments he created but also for being a true veteran of the business.
During a recent appearance on the Gabby AF podcast, current AEW star Chris Jericho disclosed an interesting fact regarding The Icon. Jericho began by crediting Sting as a performer and being heavily praised by everyone in the AEW locker room.
“Sting is one of those guys that, when he came in, he was super humble. No one ever says anything bad about Sting, ever. His retirement match, it’s one of those things where you can never duplicate that. His sons, the match that they had with Darby out there and the Bucks. Sting worked his ass off when he was in AEW. I really respected that because he really didn’t have to. “
Moreover, The Ucho pointed out that Sting never expressed his desire to have a singles match in AEW. His vision was to always compete in tag team matches alongside his ally, Darby Allin, and help him thrive in his young career.
“He never had a singles match in AEW. He never wanted to have a singles match, he always wanted to do the tags and as much as he helped Darby, Darby helped him. That’s one of the greatest mentor-students, fuck, one of the greatest tag teams of all-time for that reason. It was great to be part of that. What an inspiration.”
Last month, Sting and Darby Allin clinched the AEW Tag Team Championship titles and successfully defended them against The Young Bucks at the AEW Revolution in what was The Icon’s retirement match.
Following his final bout, Sting took the opportunity to clarify his future plans within AEW, emphasizing his contentment in retirement and expressing gratitude towards his fans for the unwavering support they showed during the final leg of his career.
