The landscape of AEW has been dramatically transformed with the signing of one of the biggest names in the history of the Jacksonville-based promotion, Mercedes Mone. She made her debut at last week’s AEW Big Business event, marking a significant moment for the company. Mone has now addressed rumors of her incredible salary in AEW as well.
Mercedes’s decision to join AEW instead of rejoining WWE was reportedly influenced by her desire for a higher salary. According to Dave Meltzer of F4WOnline.com, the former 7-time WWE Women’s champion was seeking a salary comparable to that of her contemporary, Becky Lynch.
While WWE’s offer did not meet her expectations, AEW President Tony Khan extended a significant financial offer that makes her the highest-paid woman in pro wrestling, although it did not reach the rumored $5 million per year figure circulating online.
One WWE woman star noted to us that they were hearing that the number was enough to make her the highest paid woman in pro wrestling and that they were thrilled at AEW for making the offer and happy for her to have accepted it, because in the long run it means it’s a better market for the top women wrestlers, noting, ‘I think it sets a standard that woman should be paid, too.
“The women do great numbers and have huge social followings’ and also said that it was ‘a huge deal for women in the industry who are paid a lot less than men.”
While speaking with ESPN, Mone confirmed she’s fully recovered from a broken foot suffered last year. Mercedes Mone also addressed her reported AEW deal.
“I mean, I’m not Mercedes Moné for no reason,” she said with a smirk. “Money changes everything. I’m always about that bag. Absolutely.”
Mercedes Mone also credited the AEW women’s division for her move to the promotion. Nevertheless, we will have to wait and see whether Mone will be worth all the money she is being paid in the end.
