The illustrious in-ring career of The Icon Sting reached its culmination at the AEW Revolution pay-per-view last week. However, it was a surprising sight to witness their rivals, WWE also acknowledging the incredible run of their former superstar.
Sting and Darby Allin successfully defended their AEW World Tag Team championships against Matt and Nick Jackson, The Young Bucks. This bout was hailed as one of the most physically demanding and brutal matches in the history of professional wrestling.
Furthermore, WWE took a moment to acknowledge Sting’s retirement from the wrestling industry on their own television programming. On last week’s Monday Night RAW, Michael Cole conveyed his best wishes for The Vigilante’s final performance at AEW Revolution, addressing it at the outset of the match between ‘Dirty’ Dominik Mysterio and the WWE Intercontinental champion GUNTHER.
Former WWE veteran and current AEW commentator Jim Ross called it a classy act on WWE’s part to acknowledge Sting’s contributions to the wrestling world, despite wrestling for the rival territory. He spoke about the same on a recent episode of his Grilling Jr.
“It was classy. Anyway you look at it, it was classy. I really appreciate the hospitality and professionalism that those guys at WWE showed our event. It meant a lot to me, personally, just as an old school guy, because WWE didn’t have to do that. I’m very happy that they did. It worked out really well. It felt good, felt right. Sting is so well loved and it was deserved. It needed to be said. Cole and Pat McAfee did a good job of signaling that out.”
Sting had a brief stint in WWE back in 2014, where he faced the likes of Seth Rollins and Triple H. Unfortunately, a significant neck injury led to his initial retirement. But in 2021, he made a comeback, signing with AEW, and continued to wrestle for the next three years before ultimately hanging up his boots for good at AEW Revolution 2024 and going out as a champion.
