After being released by WWE in September last year, Nic Nemeth patiently waited for the right opportunity. In 2024, he joined NJPW and quickly garnered acclaim. Winning the IWGP Global Championship at New Beginning in Sapporo marked a significant achievement. However, his first title defense, originally scheduled for April, has been postponed due to an injury.
Nic Nemeth initiated a feud with David Finlay at Wrestle Kingdom 18 last month, leading to the announcement that Nemeth would challenge Finlay for the IWGP Global Championship at NJPW New Beginning in Sapporo on February 23rd. In a gripping match, both Nemeth and Finlay gave their all. Ultimately, Nemeth secured victory by executing the Danger Zone on Finlay, becoming the new IWGP Global Champion.
A week prior to New Japan Pro-Wrestling’s Windy City Riot event in Chicago, the company is gearing up for their Sakura Genesis show in Tokyo. The IWGP Global Champion, Nic Nemeth, who recently claimed the title, was slated to defend it against Hiroshi Tanahashi on April 6.
However, NJPW announced on their official website that Hiroshi Tanahashi suffered an ankle injury sustained at New Beginning in Sapporo, which is why he has now been pulled from the New Japan Cup series, as well as Sakura Genesis on April 6. Therefore, his title match against Nemeth has now been postponed to a later date.
”Thank you for supporting New Japan Pro-Wrestling.”
”Following further examination on an ankle injury sustained at New Beginning in Sapporo, Hiroshi Tanahashi will be absent from the New Japan Cup series, as well as Sakura Genesis on April 6 to allow for a full recovery.”
”His previously announced IWGP Global Championship match will be delayed until a later date to be determined.”
”We apologise to fans looking forward to seeing Tanahashi wrestle and appreciate your understanding.”
Nic Nemeth even admitted that he almost retired before becoming the IWGP Global Champion. Nevertheless, we will have to wait and see whether Nic Nemeth will have someone else to face at Sakura Genesis in April.
