The Rock touts himself as ‘The People’s Champ’ but he is seen as the exact opposite after Cody Rhodes basically handed him his spot at WrestleMania 40. Following fan backlash, it appears WWE is now monitoring fan response to how The Rock is seen in the coming weeks.

The latest WWE SmackDown episode concluded with tension as The Rock confronted Roman Reigns. Cody Rhodes introduced the Hollywood megastar into the scene, seemingly relinquishing his WrestleMania 40 title shot, causing outrage among fans.

Fans simply wanted Cody Rhodes to finish his story at the Showcase of The Immortals and the possibility of him not being able to do that has led to a ton of backlash on WWE’s part.

According to Mike Johnson during PWInsider’s Q&A session, WWE is live television every week, allowing for the flexibility to change direction, including the original plan of Cody Rhodes vs. Roman Reigns.

The likelihood of The Rock vs. Roman Reigns remains, but there’s a possibility of reconsideration due to negative responses. WWE, including The Rock and management, may aim to address and prevent further backlash. WWE has been actively monitoring the audience’s reactions to see what they will do in the end.

‘It’s live TV every single week. They can change direction any time they want and pivot to something different, including the original Cody vs. Roman plan. Whether they actually do remain to be seen. My gut is that we’ll see Rock vs. Roman but it’s always possible Rock and/or WWE management will see the negative responses and seek to prevent that from getting worse. We’ll see. I know that WWE was absolutely monitoring the responses.”

WWE also edited out Cody Rhodes’ sad reaction during the segment. Fans also rallied for The Rock to give Cody Rhodes his WrestleMania 40 spot back as well. We will have to wait and see if this will become a repeat of the ‘Yes Movement’ in WWE eventually.
