WWE’s decision regarding Cody Rhodes’ direction for WrestleMania 40, announced on Friday Night SmackDown may have disappointed a major section of the WWE Universe. But it seems that the company might have a bigger plan for him up their sleeves.

The American Nightmare went face-to-face with the Tribal Chief Roman Reigns on SmackDown. While it looked like his choice for his WrestleMania world title match was crystal clear, Rhodes shockingly announced that he would not be going after Reigns at this year’s Show of Shows.

Cody Rhodes’ announcement was followed by the arrival of Roman’s cousin, The Rock who stared down the Undisputed WWE Universal champion, indicating WWE’s choice for the main event at WrestleMania 40.

While it may have ignited a huge backlash among the fan base, this could be a part of the long-term storytelling, ultimately benefitting Cody Rhodes. According to a new report by PWInsider, there has been some open talk about Rhodes winning the World Heavyweight title at WrestleMania and then going after the Undisputed title at SummerSlam later this year in a big title unification match.

“While finishing the story was primed to climax at #WrestleMania  40, there were already some in WWE openly talking about the idea of Cody Rhodes winning the World Heavyweight Championship and then challenging the winner of Roman Reigns vs The Rock for Summerslam in a Title unification bout so that Cody could finally finish the story.”

If this indeed is true, then it could turn out to be an even bigger crowning moment for Cody Rhodes to reign as the flagship star of this generation and finish his story in the biggest possible way.
